Sasha and son, Finnigan, at Grant Park

Job Description:
My company, Sasha B. Designs, specializes in beautiful nursing covers for breastfeeding momsI handle all of the day-to-day aspects of the business from fabric selection and nursing cover design to marketing.

How long have you lived in Oregon?
I’ve lived in Oregon for a little over 20 years in all.  I grew up in Silverton, a small town about an hour south of Portland.  I left when I was 18 to go to college in San Francisco and from there I moved to Los Angeles to work for the Walt Disney Studios. I was delighted to move back to Portland with my husband a little over two years ago.

What is your favorite Oregon place/outing for families?
I love that Oregon feels incredibly kid-centric but not at mom and dad’s expense.  Instead of taking our kids to restaurants only a kid could love, we have places like Laurelwood, a family-friendly brewery! As a first-time mom I’m constantly “discovering” places in Oregon, exclaiming over them and having other moms smile with amusement because they are places they’ve been going for years.  The Science Playground at OMSI is incredible, we love Black Butte, Mt. Hood and Cannon Beach, we went to a hoedown on Sauvie Island in late October and felt like we had died and gone to heaven.  My son and I also recently wandered into Sip & Kranz and couldn’t believe how fabulous it was.

What was your inspiration for this business?
Following the birth of my son I was a bit intimidated about breastfeeding in public.  While he was latched on I was ok, but I felt awkward dressing and undressing, pulling out nursing pads and snapping my bra shut.  The nursing covers that were out there looked strange to me.  They were either tent-like or a little too trendy and eye-catching for my taste.  What I really wanted was a soft blanket with a classic design that I could snap behind my neck that I could cuddle back around my son after he had finished eating.  After I made one for myself I gave one to my sister-in-law who also had a new baby and she was thrilled.  She started ordering them to give to her friends at baby showers and before long I was in business.

What do you enjoy most about your business?
I love knowing that I’m helping new moms through those tricky first days of breastfeeding in public.  I also enjoy the creativity involved, the scrumptious fabrics and the opportunity to create a family-friendly business that allows me to work from home.  Finally, I love bringing a little business to Oregon.  Fabric is purchased locally, all products are created locally and all of my contractors are Oregonians!

What are the benefits of doing business in Oregon?
The small-business support systems in Oregon are great.  The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) was a big help and I’ve been able to find all of the Oregon business forms I need online.  In addition, Oregon has some of the highest breastfeeding rates in the country, a nice perk when your business is nursing covers!

Any tips on how to balance work and family life?
I have been very pleased to discover that work can be just one part of the puzzle rather than the majority of my life.  I still check email all hours of the day and night but it’s because I’m excited about my business, not because I’m feeling pressure from my company.  I have a home office so I can still take care of my son full-time while running my business.  I’ve met a lot of moms who have considered starting their own businesses for years but aren’t sure where to start.  Just take it one step at a time, learn as you go and before long you’ll be up and running!

Anything else you'd like to add?
Sasha B. Designs nursing covers make fantastic baby shower gifts.  Available in Baby Girl Pink, Baby Boy Blue, Lilac, Navy, Sage and Butter Yellow, the amazingly soft fabric and classic design of our covers delight new moms.  Plus, babies often associate their nursing cover with breastfeeding, making it a favorite blankie for years to come.
